This Fitness Blogger Ditched Cardio for Weight Lifting to Get the Abs She Always Wanted

Fitness blogger Lindsey or @Lindseylivingwell has been passionate about health and wellness ever since she had open heart surgery at 7-years-old. While she always strived to be in great shape, for years she didn't go about it the right way. In a recent Instagram post, the 24-year-old shares how her approach to fitness has changed over time and what she had to do to get there. (Read: Proof That Cutting Calories Like Crazy Won't Get You the Body You Want)

"The girl on the left was doing whatever she could to keep a flat stomach," Lindsey wrote in the caption. "Endless hours of cardio, restricting carbs and other food groups, limiting calories. Weight loss was her number one goal. And honestly, she felt awful."

"FLASH FORWARD to the girl on the right," she continued. "Hi, that's me—present day. That girl is lifting weights 3-4 times a week. Yes, I still do cardio. But my main goal is to gain muscle, not lose weight."

Keeping that in mind, Lindsey shared that she stopped focusing on restricting her calories and began keeping track of macronutrients—dietary components like carbohydrates, fats and protein your body needs to function. (Here's what you need to know about counting your macronutrients and the IIFYM diet) Within weeks of her new approach, she began to see her body change—her new muscle-tone giving way to trimmed and toned abs.

"I don't care that I don't weigh any less," she wrote. "I don't care that my thighs look bigger. it's MUSCLE. I don't want to look skinny, I want to be strong."

While every body is different, Lindsey's experience is proof that cutting calories and overly restricting your diet isn't the way to go. You need a well-rounded nutrition plan to have the energy to give it your all at the gym. As Lindsey says herself: "Do whatever routine works for you and helps you be your best, HEALTHY self. Healthy looks different on everyone. You got this."
